Lol! before the boys (mr18) went out I asked how parents can nurture independence. Mr18s mate said "by giving independence, just do it- with guidance of course!". He said his parents found it hard when he got his P's and wouldn't let him go out as much but now he has built up their trust and he is happy is can gain the experience.

Thanks so much for sharing @Maggiemay! Maybe we can continue the discussion about getting part time work in another thread? Maybe in Skills to Build section?? Would love to explore it further and maybe Jacew could jump in there...

Or it can be a Wednesday wrap chat? I am sure other parents would be interested too!

Oh that's so great @AmyJay - it's always a good idea to just ask! Seems obvious but we do sometimes miss it, we can just ask young people for ideas and solutions for issues!

Tonight we talked about the ways our kids are already independent - whether it's on the domestic front, or about their school responsibilities; or their confidence with different types of people/situations; or the way they look out for themselves/friends when out and about. We then talked about the ways we help them build more independence - one step at time and don't be afraid of it failing the first time (with support)...
We talked about money and how getting involed with family planning and budgets can help...
