Son has been diagnosed wirh depression

I am reaching out for help here as I am in desperate need of support /advice/help! Are there any parents that have teenagers suffering from depression?
My son is 14 years old, he is autistic and has recently started self harming himself. He is never around us anymore, very distant, he spends all of his time in his room talking to friends on his phone or playing fortnight! He has been missing the odd day off school but this week he had his first appointment with the psychologist and for 3 days in a row he has not gone to school, every morning I will wake him up for school but he says he is too tired! Sleeping is a big problem for him! He also wakens in yhe night and can't get back to sleep! I feel helpless!!

Hello @Mamma3 , I am sorry to hear about what you and your son have been going through lately. It sounds like things are particularly tough right now. It is great that your son has already seen a psychologist for some support, I hope that you both found it to be helpful. Were you able to have a chat with the psychologist about some of the concerns that you have about your son, such as the recent self-harming? I am wondering if you have received any support around that yet? Also, I just wanted to check in as you mentioned that your son recently started self harming, is your son safe right now?

If you are interested in reading up a bit more on managing self-harm and some of the things that you can try to help your child with, Reachout has an article that I will link here. One of the strategies involves talking with your son about the behaviour and the reasons behind their self-harm behaviour in order to get a better understanding. Is this something that you have been able to do with your son yet? Hopefully some other parents will jump on with some other support too!

Re: Son has been diagnosed wirh depression

Thank you for your response.
I have tried to talk to him but it is very difficult at the best of times as he is autistic and it is not easy to have a discussion with him as he sees things differently.
He is safe. He already struggled with friendships but now has a big circle of friends, a lot of females. He recently started going out with one of them but it ended a couple of days later and he started going out with someone else and has got a lot of abuse from all the girls as he stopped going out with there friend! I don't think this is the main reason for his depression, but it certainly has not helped!
He has always had a very low self esteem, he downs himself a lot doesn't think he is good at anything!
He was quite open with me a few weeks back and said that he questions himself everyday..... Do people actually like him.....does he fit in...... he takes all his problems to bed with him and can't sleep! He is also very body conscious! He thinks he is fat! He has been in his room constantly other than meal times! This is the 3rd day of school and he has not been outside and had his blinds closed permanently and on his phone!

Thanks for letting me know that your son is safe @Mamma3 , I am glad to hear that.  I understand that you have tried to talk with your son and the reasons why it has been a bit difficult. Did you find the psychologist to be helpful with this? Were they able to talk with your son about some of the difficulties he has been experiencing lately? It sounds like there is a lot going on for your son, with his relationships at school and his sleeping troubles. Did you have a chance to discuss this with the psychologist or any other supports such as his school counsellor?

You might also find it helpful to call and speak to a trained counsellor over the phone about what has been happening with your son. One helpline that you can call to get some advice and support from is Parentline. Here is a link to their website that you can visit for some further information if you are interested.
