Re: Internet Access suggestions for defiant teenager

Am finding this helpful and thank you for your comments.

Yes have spoken to boy, he insists that all he wants to do for remainder of his life in to play games.

He lives in a most unrealistic world, how he can sit under a sheet on his bed for such long periods is beyond me.

His psych report has him at the lower end of intelligence, and part of the problem is that he cannot keep up with others, so the few occasions he does attend school, he disrupts the class by walking around talking to others showing them where he has advanced to on his games.

I am sure that the other children's parents would not appreciate how he disrupts the class.

My gut feeling has always been that he has ADD or ADHD or something similar, but are continually being told that it is trauma, my thoughts being he would have opened up by now if he really was affected by trauma, but of course I am no expert.

Thanks again

That is awesome @Hootbayne, thanks for the feedback! Glad it is helpful. Sometimes it is just good to get it off your chest and to share with other parents who also have a similar experience.

Trauma can be difficult to share especially when it is coming from children. They can be masters of few words at the best of times! You mention that professionals have alluded to trauma being present although it has not been confirmed by the child. Has there been any helpful advice on approaching the topic of trauma with him?

Re: Internet Access suggestions for defiant teenager

Hi @Hootbayne

Its frustrating when something is centered around trauma because it can take what seems like an eternity for your child to open up about it.  Sometimes I think they leave stuff out or just tell what they think you can handle.  It took my daughter about 6 months to tell me the first bit of trauma.

If your gut feeling says he may have something else going on- I think you should explore that too.  I have learned through this process that as parents we need to go with our gut.  What would it hurt to have him evaluated for ADHD?  At least you could rule it out- or possibly change meds.....just a thought.

Hang in there- we are here to listen and support!

We have been down this path to a degree, bringing it up with specialists, but they seem to pass the buck between departments as far as I can see.

Thanks for everyone's support.

Re: Internet Access suggestions for defiant teenager

Hey @Hootbayne, that is a real shame. It could be a difficult topic to provide a straight answer on and really relies on this young boy wanting to share that information. It sounds like the household can grow tense at times.. are there any fun activities that the family engages in together? Does everyone attend?
